Women's Ministry

The Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) has been an active mission’s organization at St. John’s Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia for about a hundred years. Women have been an integral part of leading the cause for mission activities in our church and throughout the Southern Baptist Convention. WMU has been active in raising funds for the support of missionaries during the life of St. John’s. Currently, the WMU meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 am in the Ruth classroom. All women are invited to a morning of fellowship, missionary study, and prayer. Also, this is a time of planning and preparing for various mission projects. Each month we are involved in a different mission activity. As the song “We’ve a Story to Tell” says, we really do take seriously the mandate from Jesus Himself– “Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19-20). This is the goal of all of our activities. We seek to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to our community, our state, our country and our world. Below are a few of our mission activities. Thank you to St. John’s Baptist Church for your continued support of our WMU ministries.

Ministries

Easter Ministries

  • One of the annual Easter ministries of our WMU is to collect contributions for North American missionaries and their ministries through the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering.
  • Another one of our annual Easter ministries is remembering our firemen in nearby fire stations with Easter baskets. We are proud of our local firefighters and all they do to support our community and save lives.

Virginia Missions

  • Each September, we collect contributions for Virginia missions through the Alma Hunt missions offering. This money is distributed through the WMU of Virginia and the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV). This offering was named for Alma Hunt, a native Virginian who was known worldwide for her missions service and her unswerving dedication to the cause of Christ.

Christmas Ministries

  • Each December, we collect contributions for international missionaries and their ministries through the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Lottie Moon was born and raised in Albemarle County, Virginia. She rejected Christianity until she was in college. She then accepted Christ and later served as a missionary for 39 years in China. She is the face of international missions within the Southern Baptist Convention and that is why the Christmas missions offering is named after her!
  • Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Ministry- Each year, we collect shoeboxes full of essential items, toys, and WOW items to send to children in need around the world. This ministry is through Samaritan’s Purse and is well known throughout the world. It brings the joy of Christmas to those who need it most.

Widow’s Ministry

  • The Widow Ministry brings together those who have lost their husbands and are seeking friendship and fellowship. This ministry meets every other month for lunch and to grow closer to God and each other. For more information on joining, please contact the church office at 757-427-5309.
